A day on the water...

Each morning after a hearty breakfast, you and a fly fishing partner will set out with your experienced guide via your guided jetboat for a full day of adventure and fly fishing. We customize each day the way YOU want to fish. We combine our years of experience and intimate knowledge of the area with your desires. We jetboat from river to river and through the interconnected lake system to various streams in the heart of the Wood Tikchik State Park to fly fish select locations.

Your fly fishing options are unlimited, as you will be fishing the most diverse freshwater system of rivers, lakes and streams in all of Alaska! Once you've flown via floatplane to Fishing Bear Lodge, daily fly-outs are not required, so everyday is a fishing day, regardless of the weather. You even have great fishing within 100 feet of your waterfront guest cabin. From the end of July to the first of October we offer Alaska's most diverse fly fishing. Each day we are apt to fish dry flies, streamers and nymph patterns depending on seasonal variations, weather, temperatures and cloud cover. We also fish salmon fry or sculpin patterns as well as egg patterns, depending on what the fish are keyed in on.

After a good day of fishing there is still the best part of the day, the evenings. Wow! While some evenings are spent enjoying a beautiful chef prepared dinner at the lodge, other evenings you will enjoy an incredible shoreline dinner hot off the riverside grill. Our goal is for you to catch a lot fish and have an amazing time. So if you are willing, we encourage you to stay out on the river. We will guide you several evenings during your stay to fish those magic evening hatches and rises that occur on our rivers during July and August.

Fishing Bear Lodge fishes many small and under-the-radar streams that offer incredible walk and wade sight fishing opportunities.

Rainbow Trout

For wild, native Rainbow Trout we fish four spectacular Alaska rivers and several streams. July through the end of August is our peak dry fly fishing. From the end of August through the third week in September, the Rainbow are concentrating on the salmon spawn. From the last week in September through October the salmon spawn is finished and the Rainbow return to aggressively taking insect and streamer patterns. Size of fish in general averages 18" - 24" inches.

Arctic Char

The Arctic Char fishing is exceptional from mid-June to the first week in July when they are voraciously feeding on the salmon fry and smolt they migrate downstream towards Bristol Bay. Through the summer, Char are available but not in the abundant numbers that they are in the spring and fall. From mid-August through October the Char are abundant and like the Rainbows are concentrating on the Salmon spawn. Size of fish in general averages 16" - 26".

Northern Pike

From mid June thru September, we have some exceptionally exciting Northern Pike fishing in the shallow bays and weed beds of our lakes. If you have ever tried "Piking" it is a lot of fun. These fish are explosive when taking a fly and most of our guests ask to fish for Pike again after trying it the first time.

Arctic Grayling

These beautiful fish with the large sail-like dorsal fin and vivid iridescent colors are abundant in the beautiful streams in our region. Grayling are generally abundant throughout the season. A light weight 1-3wt. rod makes a day of Grayling fishing one of the most gratifying and fun days of fly fishing in Alaska you will ever experience. We catch the majority of them while sight casting with dry flies. We have large grayling in our region with the average fish being 16" - 18" with fish up to 22 inches possible.

What to Bring

You should bring personal clothing items, cap, coat, gloves, fly rods (quality camp rods are available at no charge), breathable chest waders, rubber soled wading boots, rain gear, sleeping bag and a shower towel. There will be two nice single beds with clean cover blankets in your comfortable waterfront cabin. We are not able to provide laundry service, thus the sleeping bag, or you may bring sheets and we’ll have plenty of warm blankets. For your peace of mind we do have everything to comfortably outfit our guests in the unusual event that luggage is misplaced during your travels.

We provide any and/or all fly fishing equipment. Most of our experienced fly fishermen have their own favorite rods and gear that they will bring. For our beginners we have excellent equipment to use at no cost. We also provide dry fly, nymph and steamer patterns for all of our guests at no cost. We provide all leaders, tippet, indicators, sink tips, etc…. anything you might need to fly fish successfully in our waters.
